AS scott has mentioned, the Great Lake festival Cordially invites you to attend, this is the official invitation:
Greetings all…
On behalf of the Company of the Lance, it is my pleasure to invite you all to attend the third annual Great Lake Tourney, to be held in Taupo on the weekend of the 26th, 27th and 28th of January, 2008.
This year the tourney will comprise both horse and foot events, with the foot events following a more organised and formal structure than in previous years. This invitation is extended to all who wish to take part in the tournament of foot and the associated pageants, games and displays.
The Tournament of Foot:
The Tournament of Foot is to be part of the public entertainments at Taupo. The foot tournament consists of Single Combats and Field Combat, and carries a current prize pool of over $1000.00. Combatants will need to be able to fight safely and with a high degree of skill. We want as many entries as we can possibly get in the foot tourney, so we’re letting you know now what it’s all about.
The Melee:
The Grand Melee will be a two sided battle for the flags. The Melee will be multi-period, and open to all combatants considered as “Battle Ready” by their respective trainers or group leaders. Like the tournament combats, the melee will be marshalled and we encourage combatants to think of the melee as a medieval game, rather than as open warfare. Unlike the tournament, the Melee is a non-headblow engagement.
At the beginning of the battle, champions will be asked to come forward and engage in duels before the main action begins. Should two champions meet on the field of battle, fellow combatants may wish to clear a space around the combat and allow the fight to resolve itself.
Groups within an army will be encouraged to display the type of fighting that their historical period specialises in. Vikings and Norsemen are encouraged to create shield walls and clash in line. Pike or spear regiments are likewise encouraged.
Kit-wearing non-combatants are also needed as water bearers and marshals.
Groups are encouraged to consider donating one or two members to the marshal corps to assist in the running of the melee, and any folk in attendance not taking part in the battle itself are welcome to act as water bearers, to keep the re-enactors running!
A Melee will take place on each of the three days of the event.
Single Combat Tournaments:
Single combat tournaments will be held in Longsword, Sword and Buckler and Dark Age Weapons. These tourneys will be structured, marshalled events where players will compete for prizes. Copies of the tournament rules are available to registered groups and individuals.
Longsword:
The Longsword tourney will be one of our headline events of the weekend. This tourney is open to all Fighters wishing to play for the prize of Longsword Champion 2008. Combats will take place between matched opponents using Longswords, and will be fought on the tournament Friday.
Dark Age Weapons:
Combatants may use weapons of choice, including, but not limited to swords, axes, and short spears. Combatants may use a shield of any size. This tourney will take place between matched opponents on the tournament Saturday.
Please note that while this is non-historical tourney, the rules of engagement are the same as those of the Longsword and Sword and Buckler tourneys, and head-blows are encouraged.
Sword and Buckler:
The Sword and Buckler Tourney will be the final tournament event of the weekend of foot combat. This tourney is open to all Fighters wishing to play for the prize of Sword and Buckler Champion 2008. Combats will take place between matched opponents on the tournament Sunday.
Fighters intending to take part in these tourneys are strongly advised to read the rules of engagement and minimum kit requirements for the tourney. Copies of these rules are available to group leaders, trainers and registered entrants upon request. Fighters unable or unwilling to abide by these published rules will be excluding themselves from the competition.
Please remember that this is an historical tournament. Clothing, weapons and fighting styles will all be under scrutiny for the awarding of prizes, as the tourney champion prize is not the only one to be awarded. Fighters are encouraged to research good practical fighting kit as well as combat techniques and manoeuvres. Ultimately we want a good, clean fight that looks spectacular for our paying audience.
It is not the intent of the event organisers to comment on or criticise the interpretation of a fighter or group. It is our intent to run a clean, safe, historical tourney, and that is what we are going to do. Having said this, we regret that only historical combat is encouraged in either the Longsword or Sword and Buckler tourneys.
We will be posting any updates or corrections to this thread as they occur, so please stay tuned. We (Myself and Hawkwind) are happy to answer any questions concerning the event that readers of this thread care to post.
More information, pre-registration forms and more are available at the Tournament website at www.taupojoust.com We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the tourney and the very best of luck to you all.
Yours,
Nic
In addition to this there will be a living history competition, and of course there will be an area set aside for non-period tents. If you want to stay on site, please use the registration form at matthew.barrie@gmail.com.
Look forward to seeing you there.
