Live combat practice sessions

This topic was raised a little while ago in another thread but the idea was that the community in general had a desire in part for some live combat practice sessions.

The plan would be to gather at a park, in costume or not and have a bit of a whack on occasion (monthly or bimonthly?).

So who in Hamilton would be keen and what day would suit, Saturday or Sunday? Late afternoon?

If numbers stacked up it could turn into an event of its own and include short games like capture the flag, take and hold or the like.

Thoughts?

I’m keen.

Sunday would suit me best I think. And late afternoon would be good. Though I could do earlier. I could do a Saturday at a push. Start work at 5. So yeah, Sunday would be better.

I would show up in costume. Because costumes are fun.

Just playing with a basic set of rules for live combat with a bit of fantasy chucked in, just in case someone wants a little more action than just sparring… really cut down versions of rules common to many LARPs already in existence (meaning all previous larps are acknowledged and credited here).

:exclamation: Basics :exclamation:
:arrow_right: All characters start with 3HP*
:arrow_right: At 0HP you fall to the ground helpless (but conscious) and start bleeding to death (in 100 count). A killing blow finishes you off as normal. ANYONE can stabilise a bleeding person with roleplayed first aid.
:arrow_right: Light or medium armour raises HP by 1
:arrow_right: Heavy armour raises HP by 2
:arrow_right: Players may carry up to 2 weapons (which includes bows
:arrow_right: Weapons - any larp safe <180cm.
:arrow_right: 2 handed axes, swords and maces also “Knockback” your target 3m with EVERY strike.
:arrow_right: Shields - any larp safe (no wood or metal with safe edges)
:arrow_right: Bows - larp safe with a max of 6 larp safe arrows of nzLARPs standard
:arrow_right: Throwing knives etc. a brace of 3 counts as one (coreless only)

:exclamation: Magick, yes magick. Spells are cast, point, :exclamation:
:arrow_right: Spell use means no armour and you MUST have one free to cast
:arrow_right: A spell caster has choice of 2 spells (as below) and 5 uses (mana).
:bulb: Fear - will do nothing but run away for 100 count (or attempt to run out of sight and hide)
:bulb: Heal - restores all of the targets HP
:bulb: Raise zombie - creates a zombie (very stupid, 4HP) single word commands only (i.e. guard, attack etc.)
:bulb: Shield - blocks next single spell
:bulb: Zap - does 1HP damage to target
:arrow_right: All spells are cast using the following refrain: Arkane magick and mystery, this spell I cast on thee SPELL NAME HERE

:exclamation: Races :exclamation: If you can be bothered…
Humans - plain and simple
Orks - Don’t bleed to death - req. min of green skin
Elves - get 1 extra spell - req. min of pointy ears

:exclamation: The BAD guys :exclamation:
In some cases, we need bad guys. In this case ZOmBiEs. Anyone killed or eaten by a zombie become a zombie!
:arrow_right: Zombie - very dumb, 4HP, can’t be healed but GAIN +1HP for each corpse chewed on (once).
Zombies have no previous knowledge and are unaffected by ANY spell effects or armour worn. Shields are may only be used passively if at all. Only melee weapons are used.
:arrow_right: Zombie Lord - if there are more than 5 zombies in the game, one becomes a Zombie Lord (Zombies decide by vote). They gain full use of any equipment (armour, shields, weapons) and spells they once had. They become intelligent and may command the other zombies nearby using simple single word instructions. Otherwise they are a zombie.
:arrow_right: Zombies can run. They’re scary. Make sure you ham it up and make people believe you’re a zombie!

Count me in, so long as I can loan a weapon or two. Either day would suit me just fine

Is there really any need to make things more complicated than necessary? Just have sparring as sparring, and if people want an adventure then run a game! :stuck_out_tongue:

If you really feel the need, you could have a capture the flag game or similar, but with larp weapons, and a very easy “get hit 3 times and fall over” mentality. Easy to plan, simple to play, and everyone gets a little bit of their ‘geek’ on. Anything more complicated, and you might as well start running more day games.

LOL - Haven’t you figured out that Jared LIKES excessive numbers of rules yet?

3hp - luxury!

Shush you

…and it’s more he just wants to run full games but can’t find the time…

You all seemed to miss the point…

.< No dude, no we didn’t…

Yes I want to run games BUT those simple guideline/rules I posted where for the situation where we had maybe 8-10 people… for a skirmish type game… if you look at them, there aren’t really any rules at all…

Its essentially 3HP except if you have armour you get X HP but can’t cast spells… this is so people with gear will wear it to this kind of event rather than not bother… certainly it could be simpler again but thats still not the point…

Theres a spectrum:

practice fighting

simple rules (i.e. 3HP) practice games with variations (like what dave suggested)

simple fantasy rules (my suggestion)

and rules for day games or weekend games

All I was doing was putting some ideas down that could be used if you had a number of people in costume who wanted a bit more than simple rules without too much more… again I point out a skirmish type game… no need for a GM, ideal for low numbers (6-10). Thats all.

We’re having some larp combat practice at Resthills park at 3pm tomorrow the 14 of February, thats the entrance of MacMurdo Ave, in Melville.
Kind of a last minute thing, I need some hack n slash action!

you are aware that the 14th is Valantines right…

Oh wait… geek community - my bad.

^^^ the above comment is ment to be funny and not taken seriously… ((I have been informed that it might be nice to point things like this out))

Its just another overly commercialised day to some of us… but don’t fear Adam, my relationship is not going to be neglected for the hour or 2 of slash and hackery!

Ok, next practice session is 28 February 2010, 3pm at Resthills Park, off MacMurdo Ave, Hamiltron (city of the future).

If you have gear like (larp safe) weapons, armour, costume bring it along.

If we have enough people turn up, we’ll run some combat games.

Out of towners welcome of course!

Cost: Nil but donations welcome to build up the armoury

Ok, next practice session is 21 March, 3pm at the Hamilton Gardens, Camelia Carpark, Gate 2 in Hamiltron (city of the future).

If you have gear like (larp safe) weapons, armour, costume bring it along.

If we have enough people turn up, we’ll run some combat games.

Out of towners welcome of course!

Cost: Nil but donations welcome to build up the armoury (sadly lacking and my personal gear is getting hammered)

Edit: Also are Orklanders keen to come down for this kind of event? If so we can look at times and dates to suit greater numbers.
Edit 2: Note change of venue

Contact Jared knightshade.larp@gmail.com if you’re interested!

Editted for date change!

Note change of venue for the practice session on 21 MARCH, meeting at the Camelia Carpark, Gate 2, Hamilton Gardens (in Hamilton).

Editted for date change.

Hi Lochie,
Good to have you aboard.
Its 3pm, meeting at the Camelia carpark. The donation is just that, its not compulsory. And lastly, this is an informal session, no need for a character sheet, we will just have a bit of a bash around and then maybe some simple scenarios. It won’t get anymore complex than, you have 3 HP…

awesome! mind if i bring a few mates?

Sure. The more the merrier!
