Couples: Rerun

Couples and its sequel, Couples Deuce, are larps of 'psychological realism' run at two previous Battlecry events. It comes highly praised as an intensely emotional and deeply immersive larp experience from both nzLARPS and AMERICA members.

Both games have the same style though with different characters and situation. Each game features three couples with deeply intertwined backgrounds and many, many issues to sort out. The characters are prewritten, though there is work done before the game to personalise the characters and become more acquainted with them.

Players should be forewarned that the game deals with mature topics.

Its creator, Tony Shirely, has agreed to rerun the two games for nzLARPS, if there is enough interest.

There are six places available in each game - three male, three female. It will run in 2007, most likely in March and each would be an evening event lasting about four hours.

Is there interest in the community for participating in one of these game?

Previous praise for Couples and Couples Deuce, culled from various threads on Diatribe:

Stephanie Pegg wrote:The other notable game was also a semi-Larp, but much more serious. It was called "Couples", run by a chap called Tony Sinclair (2), and if I had to name the genre I'd call it psychological realism. I highly recommend this game, but it ain't for the faint hearted. From a technical perspective, the roleplaying between people became very natural and unforced - the shared reality everyone was creating between them had nothing to do with what the world is like and everything to do with how we related to each other, so everything just flowed smoothly. It was incredibly intense from an emotional perspective, and I spent 20 minutes after the game was over wondering if I was going to burst into tears before turning into Princess Yun Sing for the main Larp of the evening, who is a very different person indeed.I'm very glad that I got a private debriefing with Tony the next day, and I'm also very glad that I got to play in the game.

Craig Neilson wrote:When people ask my about Couples now, my only answer can be "where do you start?"

And just to tantalise I might just leave it at that.

Battlecry had nomination slips for awards, which is a novel idea that probably works. I wrote on Tony's (for GM nomination) slip "(Couple is) A raw, gutsy game that's not afraid to push boundaries and envelopes. It takes its players through elation, heartbreak and all the confusion in between. *****"

If you have the guts (and I don't mean you should pretend), and you get the chance, you should get in for Couples.

In fact, I really reccomend it because (from the sounds of things) the spots will be filled pretty fast by people who have played before.

Anastriel (Rowena of AMERICA) wrote:This was the only game I really cared about playing. I promised to run my pirate game as much as needed providing I got to play in this game. I am so glad that I did. This game had everything the morning game was lacking. All of the players were excellent which really does help the game along.

I dont wish to give away any details of the game as I really do recommend people experience it themselves. This was definately my highlight for the weekend.

Anna Klein wrote:I am really glad I played. It was an intense LARP but not frightening, so if you get an opportunity to play, I recommend taking it. I really enjoyed a LARP that focussed so much on character and interaction. That in itself can create a very tangible reality. The other players were so good. I liked the subtlety of the RP...very little things, minute changes in body language, looking away...it all made the interaction very real.

Overall, great game, would jump at the chance to play again.

I'm waiting to see what Tony does at Battlecry.

Also hoping to have a chat to him there. Still keen on pushing this ahead.
